It is being used to describe everything from low-effort AI-generated articles and social media posts to images, videos, advertisements, and an ever-growing amount of content that people feel has little value. For some, the term represents frustration with artificial intelligence itself. For others, it is simply a criticism of the flood of mediocre content that AI makes possible.
But I think something much bigger is happening.
Artificial intelligence has become a lightning rod.
It has become a focal point for conversations about electricity consumption, water usage, data centers, mining, rare-earth materials, land use, environmental impact, and the infrastructure required to keep all of it running.
And those conversations are legitimate.
If a community doesn't want a massive data center built in its backyard, people have every right to ask questions. How much electricity will it consume? Where will the water come from? What will happen to the land? Who pays for the infrastructure? What happens to the local electrical grid? What are the long-term environmental consequences?
Those aren't anti-technology questions.
They're responsible questions.
But I think we are missing a much larger conversation.
Because artificial intelligence didn't invent the physical infrastructure of the digital world.
We did.
We have spent decades making technology feel invisible.
When I save a document to the cloud, I don't think about where that document physically exists.
When I send an email, I don't think about the servers storing it.
When I take a photograph with my phone, I don't think about the infrastructure that might automatically synchronize that photograph to multiple cloud systems.
When I watch a movie on Netflix, listen to music on Spotify, play an online video game, use a smart thermostat, ask a voice assistant a question, or stream a YouTube video, I generally don't think about the physical infrastructure making any of those things possible.
We call it the cloud.
But the cloud isn't in the sky.
It's sitting in buildings.
Those buildings contain servers, storage systems, networking equipment, cooling systems, electrical infrastructure, batteries, generators, switches, fiber connections, and countless other pieces of hardware.
Those machines consume electricity.
They require physical space.
They require maintenance.
They eventually need to be replaced.
And the materials used to manufacture them have to come from somewhere.
That doesn't make the technology bad.
It simply makes it physical.
And somewhere along the way, I think we forgot that.
The Internet changed everything.
Then came search engines.
Then social media.
Then smartphones.
Then streaming video.
Then cloud computing.
Then software-as-a-service.
Then cloud storage.
Then connected televisions, cameras, appliances, vehicles, watches, speakers, thermostats, security systems and countless other Internet-connected devices.
Each new technology created another layer of demand.
And every layer required infrastructure underneath it.
Think about your smartphone.
It isn't just a phone.
It required mining and manufacturing to produce the materials inside it. It required semiconductor fabrication. It required batteries. It required transportation. It requires cellular towers and fiber networks. It connects to Wi-Fi networks that require routers, switches, access points and electricity.
And then there is everything your phone connects to.
Your email.
Your cloud storage.
Your photographs.
Your banking.
Your social media.
Your streaming services.
Your work applications.
Your navigation.
Your smart home.
Your entertainment.
We have created an enormous technological ecosystem that runs continuously, often without us thinking about it.
Then artificial intelligence arrives and suddenly we start looking at the infrastructure.
Suddenly we're talking about megawatts.
We're talking about cooling.
We're talking about water.
We're talking about GPUs.
We're talking about data centers.
We're talking about electrical substations and transmission capacity.
Suddenly the invisible has become visible.
And perhaps that's not entirely a bad thing.
The uncomfortable truth is that our digital lifestyle has never been free of environmental cost.
AI didn't create that reality.
It exposed it.
That doesn't mean the environmental impact of AI should be ignored. Quite the opposite.
If anything, AI should force us to ask better questions about all of our technology.
How much energy should a technology consume?
How efficiently can we operate it?
How long should hardware remain in service?
How do we recover valuable materials when equipment reaches the end of its useful life?
Where should large computing facilities be built?
How should communities participate in those decisions?
How should water and electricity resources be managed?
How much of our computing demand is genuinely useful?
And perhaps one of the hardest questions:
What are we willing to give up, change, or accept in order to maintain the digital lifestyle we've come to expect?
Because those questions don't apply only to AI.
They apply to us.
Consider something as ordinary as a Microsoft Word document.
You might create it on your laptop and save it to Microsoft 365.
It feels like the document simply disappeared into the cloud.
But it didn't.
Somewhere, physical storage is holding that data.
The same is true of your email.
Your Gmail account isn't floating somewhere in cyberspace.
Your messages are stored on physical infrastructure.
Your photos aren't floating in the atmosphere.
They're stored on physical storage systems.
Your favorite streaming service isn't producing movies magically.
There are massive computing and storage systems supporting the service, along with networks capable of delivering enormous amounts of data to millions of people simultaneously.
The Internet is one of the greatest engineering achievements in human history.
But it is also one of the largest pieces of infrastructure humanity has ever built.
And we use it constantly.
I don't think the answer is to turn off the Internet.
I don't think we should stop developing AI.
I don't think communities should simply accept whatever a technology company wants to build.
And I don't think anyone should be made to feel guilty for owning a smartphone, watching television, using cloud storage, or sending an email.
That isn't the point.
The point is awareness.
We should understand what we're building.
We should understand what it requires.
And we should become more intentional about how we build it.
Technology doesn't have to stop advancing.
It has to become more responsible.
That means developing more efficient computing.
It means improving cooling technologies.
It means finding better ways to manage water.
It means building electrical infrastructure intelligently.
It means using renewable and lower-impact energy sources where they make sense.
It means designing hardware that lasts longer.
It means recovering and recycling valuable materials.
It means thinking about where infrastructure is built and how communities are affected.
And it means asking whether every new application of technology provides enough value to justify the resources it consumes.
This may be the most important part of the conversation.
Nobody knows exactly what technology will look like twenty, thirty, or fifty years from now.
The people who helped create the early Internet could not have predicted the world of smartphones, streaming services, cloud computing and artificial intelligence that exists today.
We are now standing in their position.
We're making decisions that future generations will inherit.
They will inherit the networks we build.
They will inherit the data centers.
They will inherit the electrical infrastructure.
They will inherit the environmental consequences.
They will inherit the technological capabilities.
And they will inherit the decisions we make about how those things should coexist with the natural world.
That's a tremendous responsibility.
The conversation often gets reduced to opposing sides.
You're either pro-AI or anti-AI.
You're either pro-data-center or anti-data-center.
You're either embracing technology or protecting the environment.
I don't think those choices are inevitable.
We can believe that artificial intelligence has enormous potential while still demanding that it be developed responsibly.
We can recognize the value of data centers while questioning where they're built and how they use resources.
We can enjoy the convenience of our digital lives while becoming more conscious of what makes those conveniences possible.
We can want technological progress without pretending that progress is free.
That's the conversation I think we need to have.
Not “Is AI good or bad?”
But:
“What kind of technological future are we willing to build?”
And perhaps even more importantly:
“What are we willing to do to make sure that future is worth inheriting?”
Because the irony of “AI slop” may be that we're focusing so much attention on the content being produced that we're finally beginning to notice the enormous physical machine producing it.
Maybe that's not a reason to stop.
Maybe it's a reason to pay attention.
We built a digital world and convinced ourselves it wasn't physical.
It is.
Every email has somewhere to live.
Every photograph has somewhere to live.
Every video has somewhere to live.
Every AI model has somewhere to run.
Every connection has infrastructure behind it.
And every piece of that infrastructure requires resources.
The question isn't whether technology has a cost.
The question is whether we're willing to understand that cost—and make better choices because of it.
The future isn't going to ask whether we were pro-AI or anti-AI.
It will simply inherit what we decided to build.
And that should make us think carefully about the trail we're leaving behind.
